Top 10 tasks to tackle after you move in!
There’s something special about the first day in the new home – its quiet, full of potential, and maybe just a little messy. Before life gets busy again, take time to get organized and settle in. Here are the 10 things we always recommend doing right after a move.
- Do a quick safety and condition check. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the house. Locate the breaker box, main water shut-off, and gas valve. Check for any leaks, drips, or anything unsafe (especially if you have kids or pets).
- Unpack your essentials first! Create a “first-night” box while packing with bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, a few dishes, towels, and a change of clothes. Then move to kitchen basics and bathroom items to hold you over till you can unpack everything else.
- Give your new space a make over by deep cleaning it. Especially the kitchen, bathrooms and floors. It’s easier to do this before any furniture is in place.
- Change the locks and update the security. Replace or even rekey all exterior locks. You never know who has an old key to your new place. Update any garage door codes, alarm systems, or smart locks!
- Update your new address by notifying and forwarding your USPS mail. Next contact the DMV to change your drivers license and vehicle registration. From there you will want to notify your bank, credit cards, insurance, subscriptions, and any online shopping accounts.
- Set up and confirm you utilities and services for the new place. Make sure your electricity, gas and water are active. Schedule the internet, trash and cable setup if not already done. Another tip is to take meter readings and photos for your records.
- Go over and review your important documents. Review your inspection report to plan for future maintenance. Gather your lease, mortgage, and warranty papers and put them in a safe place in your new space.
- Enjoy getting familiar with your new neighborhood. Locate the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, hospital, and gas stations. Meet a couple neighbors! They can give you great local tips and keep an eye on your place.
- Start arranging your furniture in the functional zones: where you’ll sleep, eat, and relax. Don’t rush decorating- live in the space for a bit to see what works and how you’ll want to make it your safe place and home.
- Establish your new routines. Find new routes to and from work or school and set up your cleaning and grocery schedules. Lastly ORDER TAKEOUT OR HOST A SMALL HOUSEWARMING PARTY AND ENJOY!!
