You made it! You have officially moved into your new residence and you’re feeling excited and anxious about the new beginning. But then, you look at all those boxes sitting there in your new home, beckoning you to take everything out.
One of the best tips you could have received before moving was to label your boxes, so you know which ones go in which rooms. Bonus points if you packed a box specifically for essentials you may need prior to doing the entire unpack.
1. Start With the Essential Items
Start by unpacking the boxes that you will need more immediately. This could be your bathroom box which includes items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant (because, you know…), toilet paper, shampoo, etc. No one really wants to unpack everything the day they move in so it’s ideal to have a box of items that you’re going to need for the first night or two as you put together an unboxing plan.
2. Room By Room
After the first night … or maybe two or three nights (there’s no judgement here), start unpacking your items room by room. This helps to keep you focused on finishing a room so that when you’re taking empty boxes out, you’re not removing boxes, but leaving piles of your stuff without a new home.
3. Storage and Garage
Once you get the essential rooms situated such as kitchen, laundry room, bedrooms, and bathrooms, you may find you still have boxes left! It’s okay if you get everything unpacked except for a few boxes that hold your holiday items or storage. You may consider leaving some of these boxes until the holiday rolls around or you want to show your children/grandchildren your high school yearbooks.
