Do You Have A Moving Check List?
You find out your house’s official closing date and the numbers seem to grow large… Oh no! You don’t even know where to begin! This is where a Moving Checklist can not only keep you organized and stress-free, but help your moving company streamline their process with the most efficiency.
A Few Months Before … If You’re Able
Start with organizing and getting rid of the things you don’t want/need. This is going to help your moving company determine a more accurate cubic feet and/or estimated weight which will ultimately determine the number of people and equipment needed.
Reach out to multiple moving companies to determine the estimated cost and discuss what is in your budget
One Month
At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of what you’re actually taking versus what you’re selling, donating, or trashing. You want to book a moving company about a month or so before your actual move. If you’re moving in peak season, you may want to consider booking your move more than a month in advance as moving companies during the months of March – September are usually booked up. Make your deposit to secure your move date.
Put in for your change of address in so you won’t be receiving your mail at your previous address. Additionally, you’ll want to update other services such as subscriptions, banks, employers, and insurance or government registration agencies.
Make sure you have your moving day scheduled off from work!
One Week
Verify with your moving company that you’re all set and run through what to expect from them.
Keep an eye out on the weather – if you’re moving during fall/winter/spring, the weather can be a little fickle and this can affect moving day.
Get to eating! If you’re moving out of state, the items in your fridge and freezer won’t last and can cause mold, mildew, and bacteria to grow.
2 Days
Ask your moving company on suggestions for your fridge/freezer
Confirm with them one more time everything is set to go and confirm payment
Moving Day!!
Your movers should be taking inventory if you’re moving out of state. You should be signing off on this check list to ensure that you are receiving all of your items. This is a requirement as they pass over state borders as well to provide a BOL with inventory of what is on their truck.
Do a final run through of the house to make sure nothing is left that you want taken.
Leave a tip! If your movers did a good job, let them know 🙂
